Speaker Steve Kamper, PhD

Date: Monday, August 31, 2015

Time: 6pm-8pm

Description:

The placebo effect is one of those things about which everyone has an opinion. But beyond the superficial idea that ‘the placebo effect is really important’, what are we actually talking about when it comes to placebos and placebo effects? For those health care professionals with an eye on understanding their own practice, the issue is of particular relevance as it cuts to important questions surrounding what we do with patients.

The first part of the lecture will provide some background to the history and ideas that underlie the placebo effect, and shine a light on some of the terminology and related concepts. One of those closely related concepts is that of patient expectations; again we all think they are important, but what are we really talking about here? The second part of the talk will outline the important issues and go over some of the recent research in the area.
